Sigri from Papua New Guinea

Sigri coffee plantation, located in the Waghi Valley in the Western Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea was established over 50 years ago and rapidly gained the reputation for producing the finest Arabic coffee in the country.

Their quality control begins in the field. Cherry coffee is hand-picked and is painstakingly checked for uniformity. It must be red and fully ripe which is necessary to obtain the correct balance of sugar and acid within the cherry. The selected cherries are then pulped on the same day of picking. The fermentation process follows with a period of three days broken every 24 hours by washing. Unlike most other coffees, the Sigri process follows this by total immersion in water for an extra day. This creates an amazingly superior coffee. Sun drying further enhances the coffee and, unlike many other green coffees from this region all Sigri coffee is dun dried.

his reputation has continued to grow and Sigri has been internationally recognized as producing a gourmet coffee, equal to the world’s best, for more than 20 years.

At almost 1550 meters above sea level, the plantation has a cool climate with plentiful rainfall; the ideal environment for growing high quality Arabica coffee. All plantings at the estate are exclusively Arabica, concentrating on the Arusha and Typica varieties which produce a superior coffee than many other Arabicas in Papua New Guinea. The beans we will have in stock within two days are new crop and a are unusually dense beans for green coffee from this region(this is a good thing).

New Arrivals—

Yesterday we received a shipment consisting of two very nice coffees – A Colombia Supremo from Tolima. Tolima is a different coffee growing department of Colombia that most people are familiar with. As such, the coffee is different too. Characteristics include medium body, intense honey dry aromatic, stone fruit such as mango, very pleasant, lingering aftertaste. An outstanding Colombian.

Next, from the Antigua region of Guatemala, “Carrizal” from Louis Pedro. In its green coffee form, the coffee appears to be a mix of different farming areas. We’re not sure about this (not yet anyway), but it cups well. Characteristics include: medium intensity dry aroma, lemon-honey flavor becoming more chocolaty at darker roasts (as would be expected from a coffee from this region). Pleasing, moderate lingering aftertaste.

We’ll have both of these green coffee selections added to our green coffee offering page within a day or so. Please check back!

Daterra Farms Sweet Blue

We’re happy to announce the addition of Sweet Blue green coffee from Daterra Farms to our growing list of offerings. This year’s crop of Sweet Blue is a little unusual in that while cupping it, we found that it is actually a little sweeter than its yellow cousin (Sweet Yellow). It’s sweetness, full body, and mild acidity make it an excellent choice to use as an espresso blend base. Despite the many pleasant characteristics of this coffee, some folks might find it lacks complexity for it to be used as a stand alone SO (single origin) coffee for espresso. It really depends on the individual. The smoothness of the roast and the forgiving nature (forgiving to barista mistakes, that is) of Sweet Blue make it just an all around nice bean to use.

Cupping Notes: lots of Almond with hints of berry (between blueberry and boysenberry). Chocolate, butternut.

Josuma Monsooned Malibar Super Grade AA

Some people assume that Indian Monsooned Malibar is all the same………..simply an aged coffee from India that is pale in color and has very large beans. However, there are all different kinds of quality when it comes to monsooned coffees. As one would expect, the quality of the end result must begin with high quality beans, which then must undergo a painstaking process of laying the beans out on drying beds during the humid monsoon season and keep turning the beans on the bed for uniform aging to occur. There are no better monsooned beans than those from Josuma Coffee, which is owned and operated by world renowned Dr. Joseph John. Dr. John is the driving force behind the quality of the Malibar.

We are happy to have received several Indian coffees earlier this week. Including the Malibar, we also now have a monsooned robusta; a very interesting coffee that we are having lots of fun with as we cup it and are using it for blend development. Quality robustas are often used in Spanish and Italian espressos (pretty much “European espressos” for that matter). As of this writing, our web master, Valic, has not posted this Monsooned Robusta on our green coffee bean offering page yet!!! Expect it very soon though.

Also incoming is a very nice, India Mysore Nuggets. We are waiting for Valic to post this also.

Hacienda la Minita

From the Tarrazu coffee growing region of Tarrazu, Hacienda la Minita is perhaps the most well known. Grown at heights of over 5,000 feet, this coffee is meticulously cared for throughout both the growing and harvesting process. The green coffee goes through an insane sorting process so only the most perfect beans remain. Because of this, La Minita is available in only limited quantities.
